What is Whiplash?
The
term "whiplash" was originally coined in
1928 by H.E. Crowe. Whiplash is not an injury. It is a convenient word
to describe the overall mechanism of acceleration - deceleration injuries.
It indicates sudden reversal of inertial forces and implies that some
damage has resulted. It further implies lack of direct trauma that would
result in contusions or lacerations.
Very rarely do fractures and/or dislocation
occur. Symptoms are most frequently noticed in the neck and head, across
the shoulders, and sometimes in the lower back.
"Whiplash injuries
are particularly complex because multiple body parts are injured simultaneously."
